What are the advantages of a high serve toss?

Does it really matter? Technically it will have a higher velocity, but the time in the air is really short anyways.... I wonder if it affects spin that much.

For me, the most important thing with service is rhythm. I find it easier to settle into a rhythm for my game with a high toss serve (about 6 foot).

First things first, but not neccessarily in that order.

I find that it's easier to generate a lot of spin if the speed is already there from it falling from a high toss. That way, you can just brush it enough the change the direction and in the direction that you want it to spin, and the speed from the falling action does the rest.

I find myself in a similar situation with Tabletennissam -- the height of my toss affects my rhythm.

Maybe those characteristics will be better shown with a *very* high toss?

I feel you CAN get more spin, but the timing is more critical too. I would also guess that it's more common with euro style rubbers, since you need to dig the ball a little further into the rubber for more grip...

I use a low toss myself...

Perhaps because of that FH Globe 999N?

I find that the actual serve I want to do dictates the toss, not the rubber.

I mix in the high toss serve about 10% of the time. It's a good deception serve as I find it effective for mid-spin serve, long serve or high speed serve. I find serves get less spin effect with high toss; with the same stroke (which creates deep back/sidespin with low toss) the high toss produces less spin and higher speed - seems to me the ball has less contact time with the rubber with high toss. Sometimes this is deceptive as the opponent expects the same backspin/sidespin on the serve.

This would just be due to your technique. You need to change the technique for high toss.

I'd think so. I'm not good with high toss serves, as I don't use them much, only for a change up every now and then.

I find that the easiest way to use a high toss serve is to have the ball contact when the blade is on an almost extreme angle - ie, almost vertical.

In a room with good height, I usually toss about 10foot, but at the moment i'm happy with my 'low' 6 foot tosses, as i'm serving tight and getting in.

yea I agree mate, i would love to do high toss serves but I dont know what the right technique is, something i'll have to find out

problem with high throw imo if your throw is slightly off.. ur majorly screwed.
