A lot of tournaments do not allow unrated players to compete in the final round. As such, your friend probably won his table and then received a rating based on the players he was able to compete with. I am curious over how long a period of time it took him to become 2550. Was he progressively getting better or do you think he was a 2550 from the start just waiting for his chance? He could have easily gone to a 4-star tournament and became a 2550 overnight if he had the skill from the start.

Thanks for the insight into the league system. I would love to play in a league system of another country some day...

PipP you make some very good points about Def-Attack. I'd say he is a natural iirc he has only been playing TT for about 6 months. I'd think he would rise quickly, but it seems the system may hold him back if his teammates are far weaker than he is. Which could see his game stagnate if he doesn't get enough good competition. Now I did qualify my statements in his video thread that it is always difficult to tell level from video, but I stand by my statement that he could be as high as the levels I touted in my club. I also stand by my statements as to the level Speedplays opponents seem to be playing at (still with the video perception qualification). This to me says that Def-Attack is probably better in 6 months than Speedplay has achieved in over 4 years. This is borne out by Speedplay being impressed by Def-Attacks video himself. Now if you know Speedplay, he is never impressed by anything less than about Pro level. So that would suggest Speedplay's actual level is way, way below that of Def-Attack. And probably in fact the guys in the vid Speedplay showed of his opponents are far better than Speedplay as well, but were carefully selected from his league to make Speedplay look as good as he possibly could. :P

Gees, the crap we will write to try and get some votes in this game. What idiot suggested we play such a BS-producing game? Oh, wait, er.....Oops, I mean, who was the brilliant guy that thought up such a thought provoking and challenging way to mince words with each other. Oh yeah that's right I remember now...that would be ME

Bob, I'd agree with your estimation of the levels and that a difference in skill really comes in when 2000 hits. And that first initial rating, I've seen people both get ratings way too high and way too low because of the events they played in. I once played a guy who was rated around 2000 who had the skills of someone more like a 1200 player. What I came to find later is that he only played one event at his first tournament, lost to a couple of 2100-2200 players and got an initial rating of around 2000.

The moral of the story is, if you want a really high rating, play the highest rated event you can for your initial tournament. Even if you lose every match you're likely to get a high rating. But that really does you no good in the long run.

No, it's not about a new rubber, but I thought I would tell you what happened tonight during practice. A former player, used to play in the second highest league here in Sweden, came down to practice with us. It was great fun and even though he destroyed me, while being more even with the other guys done there, it was still fun.

I asked him how come he had such an easy time beating me, when he struggled with the other's, who I actually beat most of the time. He smiled and said that I should always have a hard time against him, as he was raised playing against defenders, back in the days before the 2 color rule and he had always loved to play against def.

So,we continued to talk and he revealed that when he played before, he used to use LP him self (Butterfly Feint, not Feint long... Never heard of them, but I suppose they are LP?) and he brought out his bat with Feint a played a set with it, before he put it back in the bag and continued to use his double inverted set up.

I asked him why he didn't use his LP, and guess what his answer was?

I'm still not good enough to use LP!

Now, since we all have heard the claims that people use LP to hide a weakness, I though this was interesting, he actually wanted to practice more before he felt he was ready to use LP again!

Now, Reb, this doesn't change anything between us ;)

Just in case anyone missed this in the LP section, I had to re-quote it here. What a joy it was to read this and it really must encourage you to change your vote to me....surely??

We must have got boring Speedplay, we haven't pulled in any new voters for a while

Now as for your impression on opponents. I believe your claims of what your opponents have said. I have no reason that you would make them up. What I don't know is how you play now. While the video you've seen of me wouldn't look all that different now, even though my shots are a lot more accurate, spin varies more and there is more attack, I'm not sure that would come across in video. Of course, the opponent does have some impact on this too. It sounds like your game style has changed since your last vid we saw, although your description of running around like the energiser bunny still draws up a similar mental picture to that last vid. However, I know you had LP and not Anti on your bat back then. So a new vid may change the mental picture or it may not. And still, even if we both posted a vid of the best looking game we could manage to play, it still may not get us much further along in our level assessment of one another. However, I'd still like to see a new vid of you. ;)

Looks like Speedplay doesn't have the stamina for a good old 21 point game, Reb's caught up and looked stronger the longer the game has gone on.
Perhaps Speedplay should have claimed victory when he reached 11 :)

Now Speedplay I am chuffed that you think I could be world's greatest anything!! That is a real compliment coming from you and it makes me feel like a winner no matter the result of this thread

Someone has taken pity on you I see and given you a minor lead once more. I'm pretty sure they think if you don't win this you will be heartbroken, while they know I can take a defeat like a man (they must have read my Reb Reports   ).

Now I thought I would prepare you for losing just to soften the blow by giving you a sign of a warm welcome:

And letting you know where to go to enjoy your stay there and make it more comfortable:

And of course whether you win or lose this little competition, to show you the trophy you will always deserve:

Works for me Haggisv! Its a pic of a grim reaper mailman delivering spam snail mail that says "You could already be a loser!" on the front...like the readers digest "You could already be a winner" one. ow of course we know no-one is already a winner and most likely are a loser with the readers digest type mail, so I'm just reversing Speedplay's message

Oh and it seems it changed someone's mind, or my post did LOL. Cos Speedplay has taken a commanding 16-13 lead from the 15-14 he had.

And now is as good a time to announce it as any....

I decided to keep up with the high standard and volume of smack talk generated by Speedplay and I here, I will run 3 matches starting from tomorrow and will still run the 8 days. The competitors are:

Div 2. Haggisv vs. Hookshot (the old double H smack-down, sounds like WWE  )

Div3. Der_Echte vs Dwruck (the only two with almost as many vids as each other  )

Div 3. Silver vs SuperHappyFunSlider. (let's not talk ourselves up too much now Silver :P )

So ready your button clicking as we head in for another weeks fun and boredom prevention! ;) Good luck to the new participants!

Reb,
You should find someone else. I am no good at "smack talk". I also tend to take it easy with the young guys. I would rather wait untill I visit the down under and we can all do it for real.
Thanks for the thought though.
When do you find time to play? You could have written a couple novels in the last three years. LOL :)

No worries Hookshot, I thought you are Haggisv were fairly equally matched when it comes to smack talk LOL.
I'll look for another opponent for him. Any volunteers?

As for you coming downunder Hookshot hope you plan on making that real soon! Don't worry about me, I been finding plenty of time to play lately. As much as my knee can take anyway. ;)

Now as for Speedplay, Loserville is all yours my friend. As it says: Population: YOU!! Hehe. I might come visit you now and then :P

That last post must have won you some sympathy with a swing voter Speedplay, its back in your favour! I wonder if on this last day we will get some new blood come out! Of course, as everyone knows, I LOVE :l: new blood (rubs hands, sharpens teeth)

Now Speedplay may have set up and excuse for losing the virtual match, which in fact would be him giving me the same excuse if he wins :P But of course we all know Speedplay don't like to lose anything! Fact is, he is far more likely to win this virtual match than he would win a real match. He wouldn't be whitewashed by me though.....I'd hand him 1 point in a gentlemanly gesture!

Perhaps as a final post, you can tell is what a WIN in this contest will mean to you?

It looks like it should finish tomorrow, as the vote goes for 8 days, and it was started last Sunday.

This isn't about being a gentleman. Go over to his town, put a oxygen/acetyline torch to his rubbers and crush every 58 of his Wavestones.

Do the right thing my friend.
