As per the heading of this post, is Spinmax Aqueous legal? I got this a couple of years ago but am wondering if it is legal. I used it yesterday on one of my 7 months old Bluefire M1 as it is losing grip. It is certainly a great help to rejuvenate the surface of the M1 but when I was playing with it, I can smell the strong Spinmax fume. That set me to think that it is surely not legal?

The old spinmax certainly had a strong smell (heptane)...but to me the new one has very little smell. If it's not been used for a while you need to shake it really well, so that the active ingredient mixes with the water again. If not you might get a very concentrated mix, which would smell stronger.

The relevant rule is:
2.04.07 The racket covering shall be used without any physical, chemical or other treatment

My interpretation is that if it only restores the rubber, not change it significantly, it's legal. The old Spinmax could turn an anti-spin into a super tacky rubber... that would not be legal, but the new one does not do this... it cleans and restores, which I don't think violates the rule.

Yes, mine has not been used for a long time. Probably became more concentrated. I thought the strong odour surely would set off one of those testing machine :P  Anyway, will try shaking them well next time before I use. I don't play comp so it is ok but I just can't stand the smell. However I have to say the spinmax does a wonderful job in revitalising the rubber surface of this M1

The other thing I forgot to mention is the pad... if it's an old pad, it may have accumulated a lot of the concentrate on the pad.

AHA!...I think you hit the reason for my experience. I did remember the smell was not this lethal, especially after a couple of hours on the rubber. Yes, I did use an old pad. I think I will give it a good wash before I use it again next. Thanks.

I use the aqueous and don't find much smell at all. I just use it in a spray bottle with a microfibre cloth to clean the rubber with it. Works well!

Alex is right about old pad. I used a new pad last night to clean. After a couple of hours, the smell is gone. Whereas with the old pad, the smell was still there overnight.

It's 2020. I can't find a newer post. Is Spinmax Aqueous still legal? Because it is not available for sale in the US despite definitely working well.

Thanks for help that anyone can provide here!

Yes it's perfectly legal...just like every other table tennis cleaner.

A cleaner would only be illegal (to use for for formal competition) if it significantly modifies a rubber from it's original properties (and even then it's hard to prove). Spinmax Aqueous just gives the rubber a (very) good clean and restores the grip, so it's perfectly legal.

I've been using it for years and it does a very good job of maintainng the grip/tack of the rubber ,the last bottle took 5 years before it ran out,not sure if it helped but kept it in the fridge to slow evaporation, however it does put a mild tack on some rubbers,my t05 will briefly
lift a ball for an inch or 2 after cleaning with it
