I hit the ball high in the air near the side of the table, it comes down and just flicks the net, falling on the opponents side but lands on the net clamp. The ball bounces off it and before my opponent can hit it, it lands on the floor.

Do I win or lose the point and why?

Let's have a look into the "The International Table Tennis Federation, Handbook 2020", Chapter 2 "THE LAWS OF TABLE TENNIS":

Net posts and clamps are part of the net:

2.2 THE NET ASSEMBLY
2.2.1 The net assembly shall consist of the net, its suspension and the supporting posts, including the clamps attaching them to the table.

And your stroke has to hit the opponent's court:

2.7 THE RETURN
2.7.1 The ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.

I'm afraid, as your ball bounces off the clamp and does not touch the court (=table surface) you lose the point.

My opponent was returning a serve and the ball landed on the metal net clamp and the spin took it up the net and dropped onto my side and he was awarded the point when I failed to return so the clamp is not part of the table,I've never seen this happen before or since,over 20 years worth of tt

If the sequence of events is

1) you hit the ball high up in the air
2) ball touches net and falls over
3) ball touches net clamp on opponent's side
4) ball touches ground

it's the opponent's point, just as 0x556c69 said.

If the sequence of events is

1) you hit the ball high up in the air
2) ball touches net and falls over
3) ball touches net clamp on opponent's side
4) ball touches the surface or edge of the table on the opponent's side
5) ball touches the ground

it's your point, as you made a proper return and the opponent didn't.

That being said, it's going to be hard to tell whether the ball hit the net clamp or the table much of the time if it's the part of the net clamp that is covering the table (rather than the portion of the net clamp that projects outward a few inches from the side of the table).
