I'm in the market for a table and a robot. I have ~$2,000 for the pair. Any recommendations? Important things to consider?

I plan to store and play most of the time in the garage; occassionaly bringing it into the driveway for outdoor play.

I live in Southern California, so the climate is somewhat mild, although some days are hot and some are rainy.

I'm an intermediate player and plan to enter some local club tournaments in the near future, so hopefully would like to find something that would mimic tournament-level equipment.

No beer pong or need for the one side up playback functionality.

I guess one of the biggest questions I have is do I need to purchase an outdoor table if I plan to keep in the garage. It would never be in direct sunlight, except perhaps on a nice day with a bbq. I'd prefer an indoor table, but do not want it to warp or get damaged by conditions in a garage atmosphere, i.e. no air conditioning, poor insulation, etc..

Shouldn't be any trouble keeping indoor table in garage. My mate kept his in his garage for years and its stood up fine. I've also had the odd hit outside on it as well like you plan to do. Just try to get a table that's at least 16mm thick surface, but 18mm+ is even better. Just don't leave in extreme weather - hot or cold for too long. I have 2 tables that have 16mm surfaces and they play just as well as the tables at my club that are 22mm. Look around on ebay, you can get some very cheap tables that are very good. One of my tables I paid $53AUD plus delivery, and the other wasn't much more (I have 2 so I leave one setup inside all the time and the other can be rolled outside). Can't beat that!

I had my TT table in my garage for over 20 years and the ball bounce are still very good and stable. I live in San Diego so your condition should not be too different than mine.

Of course, it all depends on what kind of table you are getting and how much you want to spend. Now, if you want true bounce (that means bounce like you expected), do not buy any outdoor tables, they are usually metallic, ball skids and non-true bounce. Go to a real table tennis store and search for a good table, it will last you a life time.

Yeah I agree with Tat. If you're not sure what you're looking for, better to get professional help. Might cost a couple hundred extra, but better than buying a cheap dud that you're stuck with. The tables I got were brand new and I took an educated guess on what they would be like (bought the second once I saw what the first was like), but I always knew I had the know-how to make it into a good table if it wasn't what I hoped. Lucky for me this wasn't required , so I got 2 tables for less than the price of one of equal quality in the stores including the delivery costs. Huh, now I can't even use them for a year due to my injury. Great! ... not.

We have Kettler, outdoor tables and the bounce is very good. The top is not slippery. They have been in use at the college for 6+ years I know of and probably longer. I had to look twice to see they were not wood. It is some kind of material sandwiched between aluminum I think. They are not priced cheep but not in the thousands like some tables. They are setup all the time and used almost every day. They are taken down when required to make room for other events several times a year. They are sat on and beat on alot. The tops have some marks but no dents. We used club funds to get good clip on nets. I would have to say they are good tables.

hookshot, perhaps your out door table was a special one because the ones that I have seen in our tennis club was skimpy thin, poor bounce and balls skid. Once I tried put a blade on top of the ball to get my towel, the table was so slippery the ball just slide out.

Anyway, hookshot is correct, I guess you can find better out door table, but since you are going to play it in the garage, why not a normal wood table.

Much thanks for advice! So, given the feedback, I think I'm going to go with an indoor table.

I've tentatively narrowed it down to these tables, which are in the same price range, $700 US.

Does anyone have any of these tables or have suggestions as to why one might be better than the other? Other suggestions?

If there's a really compelling reason, I'm also open to getting the Killerspin True Blue, but if the quality difference is negligible I'd rather save the couple hundred $s.

Yepp, I have seen the ones you talk about also.
I checked Kettler and closest model they have now lists for about $850 so as you can see, they are not the same as the cheap ones.
There were some like you describe at the YMCA when I was a kid. The balls they had were even worse. If you spun a ball, it looked like a washing machine out of balance.

Those are all pretty decent brands, so I think they'll be fine. I would go for the thickest one first, then choose brand...

i know im in the wrong section

but ive got a newgy 1040 to sell
its been used about 5 times

id say no more than 10 hours on it.
Only used with washed balls, kept in a protective bag when not in use

garenteed to make you USATT2500 in under a week
